I don’t own a pair of white New Balance shoes… yet. But I am at that age where safety is more important to me than virtually anything else when it comes to riding. That’s why when I took up riding again ATTGAT quickly became my watchword. I wear all the gear all the time.
Riding is Freedom
I know, riding is all about freedom. “It’s just me and the road with the wind in my hair.” It sounds romantic. And riding motorcycles is romantic, not to mention very liberating. I love being out in the open with no blind spots to obstruct my view. I love the extra work that it takes to ride a bike – I mean, you can hardly even find a car nowadays with a manual transmission, let alone everything else involved in keeping a motorcycle moving. I love the extra finesse that riding takes, requiring you to be in tune with your bike.
But I also love going back home to my family at the end of the ride. So I wear all the gear all the time.
I know all that protection does get in the way of some of those amazing aspects of riding. But in my opinion it’s not enough to matter and the trade off is worth it. I’m not a young man anymore. My time of taking risks has given way to a more measured approach to mitigating that risk. I’ve become a boring old guy. There’s only one girl I want to impress, and she’s already stuck with me (for better or worse). I don’t plan to ever find myself sliding across the pavement, but I know that is a real possibility and if I ever do I want my skin to stay where it is.
Dress for the Slide, Not the Weather
So I wear all the gear all the time. Even in the heat of summer.
So what do I wear?
- Helmet: HJC Modular (with the Cardo PackTalk Bold)
- Jacket: Bilt
- Pants: First Gear
- Gloves: Bilt
